Udall Park Zone
On Sept. 11, 1982, Morris Udall officially opened the city's Morris K. Udall Regional Center at Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon roads by tossing out the first soccer ball for the first official match. Udall represented the Tucson region from 1961 to 1991. While in Washington, he spent more than a decade as chairman of the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The 172-acre Udall Park Zone includes picnic and parking areas and multi-use fields. Before the site became a park, it had been the location of the Geological Survey Magnetic Observatory since 1909. Udall Park is a public park that features a Senior Center and recreation center (indoor basketball and volleyball) with fitness facilities, indoor jogging track, and heated outdoor pool. There is also a dog park which opened in December of 2004.
The dog park is a fenced and double-gated, one acre site that features a large turf area. It also includes trash cans, seating, and available water for dogs. There is a jogging track, bocce/horseshoe areas, 2 sand volleyball courts, fitness course, jogging track, playground area, 4 softball fields, 4 tennis courts, and 3 soccer fields. During the course of the year it is the site for all kinds of activities ranging from movies and symphonies under the stars to Tree recycling after the Christmas Holidays. All around the Udall Park Zone there are dozens of shops offering everything from bikes to lunch.
